Were you injured by an uninsured or under insured motorist?
You likely have coverage from your own “Underinsured Motorist Protection” (“UMP”) policy from ICBC. That’s true even if the vehicle that hit you was from the United States where insurance minimum coverage is lower.
Let’s say that your injuries are serious and result in damages in the amount of $500,000 for your pain and suffering, loss of earning capacity, loss of past income and rehabilitation costs. Let’s assume that the vehicle that struck you was from Texas with only a $20,000 policy.
You likely can still recover most of the $500,000 if you have UMP coverage.
Every driver in British Columbia automatically gets $1,000,0000 of UMP coverage from ICBC under their regular insurance policy. You can also buy additional coverage for up to $3,000,000 from ICBC.
In fact, we highly recommend that you purchase the additional coverage as $1,000,000 may not be sufficient coverage if you are injured in a catastrophic collision. The cost is often very little.
On these pages, we have been critical of ICBC for many reasons but UMP is an ICBC product (and offered by some private insurers in BC) that is excellent value for the cost.
If you have been injured by an under insured driver (even if the accident occurred in the United States or was caused by a US driver), please do not panic. Instead, immediately phone Dyson Law for help with your UMP policy claim.
